One of the most important factors in a casino’s operation is credit. Normally, credit in a casino is called maker credit. Other forms of credit include deposits before playing in the casino, the use of restricted casino chips and unlimited or loose check-cashing policies. The availability of credit is one of the greatest draws to a casino. For the most part credit makes for higher betting among casino customers.
Most casinos have a credit manager who is responsible for all credit granting and collection. Generally, all control over credit is placed in one person and includes accounting and supervision of insurance of credit, the evaluation of whether or not a customer is worthy of receiving credit, and the collection of the debt.
Generally credit procedures can be divided into three procedures.
Credit Investigation and Approval
Granting credit takes place in two phases: granting credit to new customers and granting credit to established customers. Generally, the customer fills out a credit application and a bank reference form, which includes the estimated amount of credit the customer would like to receive. Generally, a casino recommends some sort of daily limit of credit in order to prevent the casino from extending too much credit. If the customer is a first-timer, a temporary courtesy credit may be granted or the customer may be asked to wait until the next day when his or her credit has been authorized. In Nevada there are also several independent services that allow customers to receive credit at any time of day or night.
Issuance of Credit
If the credit is approved, it is then issued. The customer generally signs a form in exchange for casino chips. It is important that they provide identification that proves they are the person who applied for credit. Credit players generally receive a different type of chip to play with at tables to eliminate their ability to receive credit, get chips and then turn them into cash.
Credit at Tables
There are two main ways that credit at the tables is handled. The first is for it to take place at a centralized location, such as the table clerk’s stand. The second method is for credit to take place entirely at the gaming table.
